It is finished! A wonderful series, and a bunch of Advent people who got engaged through the small group (or Adult Forum big group) studies that took it deeper.
What a journey. Frank’s wife Cassie was already open to serving. His son Evan responded sacrificially to Ray’s teaching (about giving good sheep rather than stinky sheep). His daughter Megan had no problem stepping up and serving. Frank took more work. But we watched him move from a self-centered focus to awareness and guilt [his dream], the humility of listening and caring [in the soup kitchen], a vulnerability and trust in time of need [in the hospital], and finally a generosity that included time AND resources…and not only gave to a need but empowered others. (I think of a Habitat for Humanity motto – a hand up, not a hand out.)
Investing in Life
What we sow is what we reap. Not in some prosperity gospel model that says if you give to God, you will be showered with that many more material or financial blessings. There was NO sense that Frank would be better off financially. In fact, he anticipated some tightening of the belt with the new plan. But was he better off never-the-less? Heck yes!!! He and his whole family found a joy (and purpose) in responding and using God’s gifts for others.
What we sow is what we reap. Not in eternity; not as a way to buy heaven. (Jesus took care of that.) But the difference between a self-serving, inward focus… and a blessed and joyful investor in God’s mission. The chance to sow the seeds of God’s reign through our teaching and mentoring ministries, through worship and fellowship, through serving in ways that strengthen our church community and in ways that serve and bless the world around us. WOW!
Which do you want? An inward focus or investing in a life worth living? Experience the life that truly is life. Live generously!
