We’ve finished the series at Advent, but I was behind in my blog…so I’m releasing weeks four and five this week. Here’s week four.
When everything seems to be going great…
We had a perfect happily-ever-after story up until this week. Frank had discovered and faced his own lack of generosity and – led by his gardener (prophet) Ray and accompanied by his family – Frank had discovered the humility and joy of serving. He got it. Generosity is deeper than the pocket book. It’s about the heart. And then, Frank’s wife Cassie ended up in the hospital in critical condition and suddenly Frank was powerless, out of control, angry and afraid.
This move segment was all too real. I looked out at our room as we watched the video at each service, and I saw people who had lost a loved one, or dealt with some recent crisis, or were in the middle of illness or loss. It was real. And into that reality came Ray’s real invitation to turn to the strong tower.
First, it’s a reminder of God’s strength and promise in the middle of our hurts and losses. God doesn’t promise to make everything perfect, but promises a security system that is “out of this world.” Sometimes God does the miraculous. I’ve experienced that. Sometimes God reweaves things to bring good out of the bad. At all times God walks with us.
Second, the tower reference reminds us of the opportunity to get perspective – God’s perspective. It usually takes a friend like Ray to help us do that, but it helps to step back, and pause to see it from God’s vantage point…to see all those around who are helping and caring, and a past with God’s presence and a future with God’s promise. Take a breath. Trust…
I promised this series DOES have a good ending. But for this week – real life, and a real God in the midst of it. And a person who helped Frank to see it.
