For those who missed this past week’s sermon, I have included information for you at the end of this blog post, so you can catch up.
The scene at the end of the video was pretty haunting. Frank Donovan was left stunned by his son, Evan’s, generosity, when Evan gave away his most prized possession. Evan had learned a valuable lesson from Re about giving God your first and best – not giving him your “stinky sheep”. Evan’s childlike faith caused him to take that to heart by giving away his favorite toy – a vintage bi-plane. Frank didn’t have that same faith (and generosity)…and he felt it.
The point isn’t about how Frank measures up to the other characters in this series. The point isn’t how much money Frank will give. As Frank is going to find out, it’s about his heart, and his response to God’s love.
Whether it is about giving freely of home and hospitality (as Frank’s wife Cassie does), giving sacrificially of time and service (as the gardener – and prophet – Ray does), or giving it all (as son Evan does), generosity comes from the heart. And Frank is going to learn how God can transform that and grow that.
I am sooo looking forward to this series, EXCEPT for this coming week. Don’t miss it, if you want to see me squirm and apologize for the cringe-worthy stereotypes used in this installment of our story. But it’s still well done, and a necessary part of a great story of faith…for Frank…and his family…and for us.
One final point. I picked Bible readings that match this series rather than using the ones that so many other churches will be reading. But coincidentally, the second reading that others will use this Sunday ends with these verses from 1 Timothy.
They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life. 1 Tim 6:18-19
Check out the subtitle of our series again. “Living Generously: Experiencing the Life that Truly is Life.”
Enjoy the series. Take it further with a small group. Take hold of the life that really is life.
